[Waning Acceptance to Age? - German. English Abstract] • 2004

The continuously increasing individual life expectancy and the decline in birth rate lead to a high number of old persons, which is unique in history. This phenomenon of industrialized countries will be even more accentuated in developing countries. Progress in medicine as well as better nutrition, living and working conditions and the technical possibilities to compensate for deficits in activities of daily living are at the roots of this evolution. The health status of the 65–80 years old improved in the last decennia to an extent that they now match the functional competence of formerly 10 year younger persons. Prevention and improved medical treatment of chronic illnesses contributed to this development.
