The prolongation of average life expectancy, and the sometimes dramatic decrease in birth rate, have given rise to an unprecedented transition: the age pyramid that existed less than a century ago has literally been turned upside down. Ironically, as people are increasingly living longer, the function of and respect for older people is diminishing. The concept of the graying planet is viewed too often as a crisis. Beyond the demographic data there are social, economic, cultural, psychological and spiritual considerations. We must see this as an opportunity and challenge. Imagine the production, knowledge and consumer power of one billion human beings over the age of 50.
