UN World Assembly on Ageing: There's a serious side to our reluctance to admit our age. Opening the United Nations World Assembly on Ageing on Monday, secretary general Kofi Annan said it was his 64th birthday, and that he therefore felt empowered to quote the Beatle's song and ask, on behalf of all older people, "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64?" — "I trust the answer is yes", he said.
Nevertheless, these words lie at the heart of what most of us fear about ageing, I think. Not death, but neglect; not the added years (and pounds), but the possible loss of love, security and respect. Delegates to the week-long assembly are hoping to complete a global document to guide policies for the rapidly greying planet, from providing adequate pensions and affordable health care to preventing discrimination and abuse. — Ruth Dyson (2002)
